Wickens Frederick

Frederick Wickens passed away, in Western Australia on the 10th September 2003.   He was born on the 13th March 1925.

Fred came to Fairbridge with his sister Evelyn in June 1938.

This was the second party to arrive at the Farm school. The party had 29 children. The ship was the S.S. Oronsay.

Fred served in the Armed Forces during World War 2.

Evelyn Mathew  his sister (nee Wickens passed away in 2008) Read her story in the vale section, under Mathew.

Of interest would be that Fred was on the Molong Council in May 1940, when the issue of tripe was raised, apparently the Principal Heath, wanted it served to the children as he thought it was a nourishing food.!!!  The suggestion was opposed by the children and howled down. To appease the situation a promise of sausage’s was offered for alternative weeks.  Thanks Goodness.

About The Phantom

Came to Fairbridge Molong in 1957 and began immediately as a farm trainee. I was 15 yrs old. I loved the work, but found it very lonely and the bullying was awful. Billy Gelson saved me many times in Orange cottage from beatings. I loved this man. I have had a successful life with a wife who died in 2003. I have 3 children and 2 grandchildren. Life has been a challenge since Maureen died.. Brian K OF
